Optical emission spectroscopy is a widely recognised and well‐established tool in a number of different branches of science. In this contribution, simple modelling of imaging prism and grating spectrometers using optical design software as well as a comparison of both principles are presented. Further, basic considerations on the design of such spectrometers and a transfer lens for imaging a given light source onto the spectrometer are presented.
