The interest for OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) has grown since SONY sold out its first two shipments of the XEL‐1: an 11 inch TV with an OLED screen of only 3 mm thickness. With its superior contrast ratio, vivid colors, speed and huge viewing angle this is indeed the ultimate TV solution. But OLED technology has much more potential: it can also be applied for lighting purposes. In this article the potential and status of OLED technology for lighting applications is reviewed.
