A method to detect short‐chain α‐hydroxyaldehydes in mammalian tissues is described. Aldehydes or their masked precursor molecules are converted into dithiolane derivatives. These are separated by thin‐layer chromatography and registered by multiple ion monitoring after trimethylsilylation. Fragmentation of 2‐(1′‐trimethylsilyloxy)‐1,3‐dithiolanes was studied by using electron impact ionization.
