Acyclic, cyclic and bicyclic olefins have been found to undergo acetylation in the gas phase under acetone chemical ionization, giving rise to diagnostic ions. Terminal olefins show enhanced loss of water from the [M + 43] + adduct. The [M + 43] + ion of Δ 3 − Δ 4 − and Δ 5 ‐olefins give characteristic collision‐induced dissociation spectra.
