It is shown that depending on the experimental parameters upon electron impact and chemical ionization (CI) radical addition with subsequent CI, and formation of dihydro products which can undergo subsequently the reaction mentioned above, contribute to varying extents to the CI mass spectra of tetracyanoquinodimethane and tetracyanoethylene. These results are of importance for systems where radical reactions under CI conditions are to be expected.
