The genesis of the [C 7 H 7 ] + ion in the mass spectrum of 3‐dimethylamino‐1‐phenylpropanone (Mannich's base) hydrochloride has been studied by 13 C and deuterium labelling and by application of metastable transitions. It has been shown that this ion is formed from [M − OH] + , involving non‐adjacent carbon atoms.
