Abstract The electron impact induced fragmentations of flavone have been studied with the aid of high resolution measurements, metastable decompositions and deuterium labelling. Based on the obtained data a mechanism for the formation of the [MH] + ion is proposed and further substantiated from the study of substituted flavones.
