The principal fragmentation pathways of mevalonolactone are initiated by cleavage α to the hydroxyl function. Each major route has been delineated by using isotopic labelling and metastable analysis. A knowledge of this fragmentation pattern is useful for the calculation of isotopic purity and specificity in samples of mevalonolactone used as substrates in biosynthetic studies.
