Mass spectrometric investigations of α,δ diols and their halogenated derivatives revealed the necessity of postulating a mechanism for both their elimination of water and of haloid acid. This mechanism proceeding via a transition state of larger ring‐size than described for similar monofunctional aliphatic compounds was confirmed by deuterium labelling.
