The relative intensities of certain ions in the mass spectra of trimethylsilylated pyranoses have been observed to depend on the stereochemistry of the molecule. A system has been developed which is capable of explaining the differences between the anomeric forms of D‐glucose, D‐galactose, D‐mannose and D‐xylose.
