3‐ 13 C‐Isatin has been shown to eliminate the 2‐carbonyl group as the initial fragment, followed predominantly by loss of HCN. In 4‐, 5‐and 6‐methyl‐isatin the loss of the second carbonyl group competes evenly with HCN loss, whilst the 7‐methyl isomer fragments almost exclusively by successive loss of two molecules of CO from the molecular ion.
