The mass spectral characteristics of p ‐toluenesulfonic acid have been determined and correlated with those of related sulfoxides, sulfones and sulfonates. The relative amount of the molecular ion ( m / e 172) observed varies with the temperature and time involved in sample volatilization. Evidence of migration of the aryl group from S to O is seen in a metastable transition from m / e 172 to 107 [C 7 H 7 O] + .
