The mass spectra of the tetraphenylcyclobutadiene complexes (C 6 H 5 ) 4 C 4 Fe(CO) 3 , C 5 H 5 CoC 4 (C 6 H 5 ) 4 and C 9 H 7 CoC 4 (C 4 H 5 ) 4 are reported. Evidence is presented for the loss of the tetraphenylcyclobutadiene ring by a two‐step sequence involving successive losses of two (C 6 H 5 ) 2 C 2 fragments. Significant differences are observed in the fragmentations of the monopositive and dipositive molecular ions of C 9 H 7 CoC 4 (C 6 H 5 ) 4 .
