The mass spectra of two fungal metabolites, aspertetronin A and B, have been examined in conjunction with a series of tetronic acids and related compounds, and as a result the major modes of fragmentation of the tetronic acid ring system have been determined. Several substituent dependent rearrangements have also been recognised during this investigation which should prove useful in the structural elucidation of unknown compounds.
