A two‐stage method for building analytic models based on experimental data is proposed. It is applied to thrust modeling for the F‐15 aircraft. A minimum‐time problem is solved to show efficacy of the models in indirect optimal control computations. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
