The idea of an optimal decision strategy is applied to a class of tracking problems. The resulting pointwise optimization problem is posed as a linear programming problem, in contrast to previous work where it is posed as a quadratic programming problem. A useful result concerning the convergence of the tracking error in the presence of control constraints is derived and applied to an aircraft terrain‐following system.
