Optimal modal‐space control of rotating disc vibrations in a complex field is presented. Adoption of the complex notation reduces the order of the system dealt with so as to eliminate the difficulties encountered in formulation and computation. A new technique of choosing a weighting matrix is also suggested for the optimal regulator design. With this technique the backward and forward travelling waves are weighted independently by employing the wave co‐ordinates. The performance of the proposed scheme is finally illustrated through an example.
