The problem of eradication of an insect pest population can be viewed as a time optimal, discrete time, non‐linear control problem in which the objective is to achieve eradication as quickly as possible. We discuss the solution of a simple model problem in which eradication is carried out by means of the sterile insect technique. An algorithm for the resulting control problem is presented.
