Minimum‐time climbs in the ‘energy’ approximation are reviewed and further consideration given to choice of variables. A pair of variables which seems to offer an attractive replacement for altitude and air‐speed in singular‐perturbation procedures is suggested. Use of the new variables in an energy‐modelled climb‐dash problem is illustrated.
