Multigrid V‐ and F‐cycle algorithms for the biharmonic problem using the H‐C‐T element are studied in the article. We show that the contraction numbers can be uniformly improved by increasing the number of smoothing steps. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2005
