A method is developed for the recovery and representation of near‐optimal finite‐element meshes of rectangular elements in the mapped domain. The method extends a previously known method, which was restricted to square elements in the mapped domain. The method was developed to obtain a simple, cost‐effective representation of computational meshes for adaptive finite‐element methods solving parametrized problems. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
