A universal method which can be used to generalize thin plate elements to thick ones without adding any extra degree of freedom (DOF) is presented in this paper. To illustrate this method, a rectangular moderately thick plate element with 12 DOF is constructed on the basis of the well known thin plate ACM element. The element can be used in the analysis of both thin and thick plates. Shear locking is avoided.
