An engineering approach to the derivation of shape functions, for Lagrangian and Hermitian, boundary‐described triangular elements is introduced. The results of the special cases for the few published elements agree with the literature. This approach has been used to generate shape functions for elements of the ABSEA finite element system at Cranfield, and the results derived from the use of such elements have been shown to be reasonably accurate.
