Numerical experiments on the stepwise smoothing of non‐uniformly‐spaced‐two‐dimensional arrays of data by a simple and computationally inexpensive method have been performed. The method can readily be extended to more than two dimensions and the degree of smoothing can be improved by iteration. The method appears to be most efficient when the orientation of the reference axes is close to that of the curves which the data follow.
