Some tools are presented that may be used when implementing an application oriented software system. FEMSYS, a system for calculations based on the finite element method, will serve as example. Features of a simple problem oriented language and its parsing are treated and also a generally applicable data structure for both internal and external data storage. It is indicated how a system can be implemented which is suited to the solution of both standard and non‐standard problems.
