An eigensystem subroutine ‘EASI’ due to K. K. Gupta is critically discussed. Some faults are pointed out and remedial measures which have been adopted in practice are presented. The result is a consistently reliable convergent algorithm which has solved narrow bandwidth problems of order up to 1000 × 1000.
