A symmetric central finite difference operator is derived for the small deflection analysis of transversely loaded, ‘thin’, elastic plates, whose stiffnesses vary as functions of the in‐plane co‐ordinates. The operator is written here in Cartesian co‐ordinates for a square mesh, but the same technique can also be used to construct an operator for a rectangular mesh.
