Five finite difference and two finite element schemes for solution of the one‐dimensional consolidation problem are compared and evaluated from the viewpoints of convergence, accuracy, stability and computational efforts. An example problem involving laboratory experiments is also solved by using various schemes. Conclusions are drawn regarding relative suitability of these schemes for practical applications.
