We analyse the behaviour of symmetric boundary value methods applied to Hamiltonian evolutionary problems. We derive a forward–backward error analysis which allows us to state that the obtained numerical solution may be essentially regarded as the exact solution of a perturbed Hamiltonian problem of the same type as the original one and vice versa . A numerical test emphasizes the theoretical results. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
