Grantmakers and donors looking for ways to improve opportunities and well‐being of communities of color, the poor, the disabled and other groups should invest in philanthropic groups serving the American South, a new report suggests. Doing so will draw upon deep experience with fighting regressive and divisive policies that have stood in the way of marginalized groups for decades, according to As the South Grows: So Grows the Nation, recently published by the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy. But, the report says, foundations need to change their grantmaking practices and nurture relationships with Southern philanthropy groups in order to produce the necessary social changes in the region—and beyond.
