The paper deals with the analysis of excavations which are very long and can, for all practical purposes, be considered to be infinitely long. Special infinite finite and boundary elements are developed for the modelling of the infinitely long part of such excavations. Test examples are presented which show the accuracy which can be obtained by using these elements. Finally, examples of application in mining and petroleum engineering are shown.
