In the idealised modelling of ground distortion induced by a freely deposited heap of granular material, consideration is given to a fundamental problem in classical elasticity whereby an axisymmetric distribution of vertical conical loading is applied to the surface of a half‐space. Closed‐form expressions are derived for the deformed shape of the surface, and three variations of the integral transform method are described for determining stresses and displacements within the half‐space. Extensive numerical results are presented in graphical form.
