Remedial measures were required for a gold tailings dam in South Africa which had undergone a minor slope failure. Information from laboratory and field measurements was used for evaluation of the present and future stability as the height of the dam increased. To aid the design process, numerical methods were used for prediction of in situ conditions. Stability analyses by computer were then used to optimize the type of remedial measure.
