The problem of the critical height of a vertical cut in a purely cohesive medium has been repeatedly dealt with by several authors and, in spite of its apparent simplicity, the characterization of satisfactory solutions has presented, for a considerable period, notable difficulties. The present paper supplies the results obtained with a numerical method, which has so far been applied successfully to a considerable number of problems.
