The deflection of, and the pore pressure at, the surface of a saturated clay mass are computed by modelling the mass mathematically as a consolidationg half‐space. Specifically, attention is focused on the effect of a surface cover which impedes, though does not entirely prevent, the flow of the pore water. A number of results of interest are reported, generalizing work reported earlier by McNamee and Gibson 8 .
