This essay compares different sanctuary‐making projects in North America, including animal sanctuaries and sanctuary communities for undocumented immigrants, to examine how they may contribute to better rural futures. Specifically, it argues that sanctuary as a simultaneously spatial and ideological mode of being could provide the basis for a broader counterhegemonic challenge to violent practices of exploitation targeted at a range of different others.
