For dirt‐bikers, the California desert is a playground. But other actors criticize the recreational activity's impact on public lands as they seek to save sacred landscapes, historical sites, and endangered species habitat. Tracing debates about desert land use in the United States between World War II and the present, this essay explores questions of possession, commemoration, and leisure through the life history of a pro‐riding activist.
