Optical metrology always has been an important facet of information display research and development. Having tools to characterize the performance of any technology is an obvious requirement, but it's especially important in a field that bridges the boundary between human visual perception and the flow of information. Understanding how the images on a display are rendered and perceived is critical. The perception part is handled by an array of specialists in the visual sciences. The other part is addressed by dedicated researchers in the field of display measurement.
