We present a method for the direct correlation of quantitative changes in lactate concentration and intracellular pH during global ischemia in the perfused rat heart using rapidly interleaved 31 P MRS and water‐suppressed 1 H MRS acquisitions. The ischemic myocardial buffering capacity was determined and found to be consistent with previous experimentation.
