31 P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) was performed in vivo on normal and ischemic rat intestine. Within 3 min after induction of ischemia, there is a dramatic fall in adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and rise in inorganic phosphate ( P i ). Our results suggest that MRS may prove useful in the early detection of mesenteric ischemia. © 1987 Academic Press Inc.
