The germ line of avian species originates in the yolk sac, and migrates to the future gonads via the circulatory system. The primordial germ cells of chicken, for example, are enriched in the blood at Hamburger‐Hamilton stages 13 – 16 (shown here). Jung et al. (this issue) demonstrate that primordial germ cells are readily size‐selected from the embryonic blood of different birds at the equivalent stages of development .
