Many genes are specifically activated in primary spermatocytes during meiosis, but little is known about the molecular mechanisms. Yoneda et al. (this issue) report a novel mechanism for the mouse spermatocyte‐specific Prss42/Tessp2 gene : A transcribed long non‐coding RNA (red) from this gene interacts with the Prss42/Tessp2 promoter, while sequences flanking the long non‐coding RNA appear to work as enhancers .
