Proper use of image files is essential to preserve and maintain digital information for processing and analysis. Hornick and Hinchcliffe (this issue) discuss image file types and their use during processing, analyzing, and archiving light microscopy data. Here, a demembranated Xenopus sperm head added to a frog‐egg cytoplasmic extract has formed a pronucleus, with an associated centrosome at the tip (blue). The image has been pseudo‐colored and digitally processed to highlight edges. The underlying greyscale image shows degradation following JPEG compression.
