The early male embryo exhibits faster growth rates in both mammals and birds, even though ancestors of these animals diverged around 300 million years ago. This characteristic may play an important role in the evolution of sexual dimorphism in these taxa. Tagirov et al. (this issue) tracked the source of this different developmental rate in chicken embryos, which is apparent by 30 h of incubation. A male embryo is shown here, which is currently one stage ahead of the female embryo (see article thumbnail).
