Studies in the 1980s suggested the existence of a hormone, termed gonadotropin surge‐inhibiting/attenuating factor (GnSIF/AF), that appears to be secreted from small ovarian follicles (visible as dark spots in this ultrasound image of a human ovary, false‐colored here in maroon). In this issue, Vega et al. rigorously examine available evidence regarding the existence of GnSIF/AF, previous attempts at identi. cation, future directions for research, and potential clinical applications.
