The fruit bat Cynopterus sphinx breeds twice in a year in quick succession, once in winter and again in summer, carrying a single fetus each time. An unusual feature of the animal is that, as compared to the pregnancy of summer, the winter pregnancy is elongated due to delayed growth of the embryo at the early gastrula stage. Anuradha and Krishna (this issue) demonstrate the role of adiponectin in the reactivation of embryonic development following this winter delay. Photography credit to Arup Acharjee.
