In the absence of germ cells, the zebrafish gonad develops as an empty somatic testis. Hartung et. al. (this issue) demonstrate that Vasa is essential for progression beyond the pachytene stage of meiosis by a tumor protein 53 (tp53)‐independent mechanism. This image shows a hematoxylin‐and‐eosin‐stained, transverse section through the trunk of day‐42 vasa;tp53 double‐mutant fish. The somatic cells of the gonads, which lack germ cells at this stage, are seen above the intestine .
