Sumoylation is a modification that can be made to many kinds of proteins and is involved in many biological functions. Bub1‐related kinase (BubR1) is a spindle assembly checkpoint protein that can be modified by small ubiquitin‐related modifier‐1 (SUMO‐1). Yuan at el. (this issue) found that centromere localization of BubR1 (green) in metaphase‐I‐stage oocytes was altered after inhibition of SUMO‐1.
