Abalone is an important model for the molecular interactions and evolution of fertilization. Palmer et al (this issue) used testis and sperm from red abalone (shown) to look for new abalone sperm proteins, and found a rapidly evolving and abundant acrosome protein that had not been seen before. The upper right individual is beginning to spawn.
