Several types of stem cells are characterized by the expression of oct4 in vertebrates. In transgenic medaka (Oryzias latipes) generated by Froschauer et al. (this issue), oct4‐ EGFP expression marks the stem cells in development and in adult testis, in which the spermatogonia are found at the distal ends of the testicular tubules (background, red). When the fluorescence of these EGFP‐positive cells is quantified by flow cytometry (foreground), the spermatogonia elicit the strongest fluorescence (horizontal axis).
